The unique ability that each and every individual possesses that enable him/her to control their actions is known as free will. Free will is directly connected to two other vital philosophical issues: freedom of action and moral accountability, which is the main reason why the debate is so vital. Simply stated, a person who has free will refers to an individual’s ability to choose his or her route of action. However, animals also appear to suit this measure, further adding to the debate because free will is typically thought to only be possessed by human beings (Broad 1990). Over the years, there has been an extended running controversial debate as to whether free will truly needs an agent to encompass a definite ability of will, or†¦show more content†¦However, according to Hobbes’ theory, it can also be assumed that an external factor, which in this case is the dog needs exercise and hence needs to go for a walk, has influenced the individual and therefore the action taken, because the decision did not arise form that individuals free will. Still, if there is a difference amid freedom of will and self-determination, it would appear that the notion free will is essential for the performance of free actions. Fundamental questions propelling this debate is why an individual has to be responsible for his action yet they (actions) are not out of free will but from environmental factors which he/she cannot have control over. The simple answer is that we are not, however unpopular this reality may be. On this view, while it may be of immense realistic value to hold people liable for their actions, and to utilize systems of reward and penalty, no one is really justified of blame or praise for anything (Honderich 2002). However, an exception to this theory, lies in the premise of determinism proposed by the British analytic philosopher Galen Strawson. The premise implies that the future is predetermined, because every event has a cause and the causes stretch back to time immemorial (Strawson 1994). From this school of thought, the theory of incompatibilism arises, where determinism is thought to rule out free will. An overstuffed pillow sits in the right hand corner of the bed. It is of cheetah print with dark brown and black tones that greatly contrasts the brightness of the comforter. I, however, believe the fact that it clashes with the bedspread adds mystery: her bed would look like long stripes of zebra and leopard without this huge contrast of hues to divert the eye away from vertigo. Then there is the pillow she insists matches her bed. The pillow is of cheetah print. And yes, there is a big difference between leopard and cheetah print (leopard print is solid dots while cheetah print is only an outline of color). When a person looks at her bed, the eye wanders to the insipid lack of color the cheetah print pillow offers. Compared to the brig ht colors, which is the only good thing, at the least, that the bed set has going for it, the cheetah pillow is the ugly, deformed MM whose peanut is sticking out halfway, creating a bulge in one side that makes one throw it away rather than eat it. Rhetorical StructureMy writing expressly conveys my meaning in a direct way. Although I did not start my paragraphs with, My roommates tasteful bed is spotless because she is a clean person, or, My roommates bed is spotless because she never has a chance to mess up the ugly thing, my meaning was implied. But it was not vaguely implied. By the second sentence in the negative paragraph, my reader knows why I have perceived her bed is always spotless. The first paragraphs meaning is backed up in the second sentence, which implies she is a very tidy person. The details I selected support each paragraph. In the positive paragraph, I made a point to describe how presentable the placement of objects on her bed is. I also tried to paint a picture of the comforter as if the reader was actually seeing it. The way I described it left a tinge of admirability, but just enough to allow the reader to decide on his or her own. Rather than implying the bright colors were pleasing to the eye as in the first paragraph, the negative paragraph was intended to lead the reader to believe the brightness of the comforter was too much and too busy to be attractive. 6 Budget-Friendly Ideas to Keep Your Students Engaged thisYear As a teacher, you know firsthand that students often respond to experiential and interactive learning methods, not to mention they often remember these lessons more vividly. Regurgitating information from a textbook might be today’s prevailing academic model, but you understand that students are more likely to absorb this information when they recognize the real-world applications. So, the question becomes: how can you supplement their core curriculum with age-appropriate and cost-effective activities that engage? The obvious answer is through technology, but this medium- despite its visual and hands-on appeal- can be expensive. Fortunately, there are other tools at your disposal to engage students’ attention and arouse their excitement. These budget-friendly ideas, for both inside the classroom and out, will help make each lesson memorable and, therefore, more effective. Make the following â€Å"6 Rules of Engagement† your educational compass this year. Bonus: they all begin with â€Å"E† to promote rapid recall- because teachers already have enough to remember! Encourage Them to Get Moving Physical movement sparks mental focus, so designate classroom time for students to leave their desks and experience a more kinesthetic learning approach. Combine specific actions with academic stimuli through games that correspond with the concept you’re teaching. For instance, to make arithmetic more interesting, supervise a â€Å"chalkboard relay† competition, where students take turns standing at the chalkboard, writing a math equation, then racing against their classmates to see who can get the correct answer the fastest. Experiment with Teaching Styles There are three basic learning modalities- visual, auditory and tactile- but do you use all of them to reach students in the classroom? If not, consider periodically changing your classroom manner to accommodate all three approaches and connect with each type of student. For example, create a visual presentation with eye-catching PowerPoint slides and colorful imagery to inspire the visual learners. Then, assign everyone a different passage from their textbook to read aloud, stimulating the auditory learners. Finally, organize a group activity that incorporates simple choreographed movements, patterns or rhythms to energize the tactile learners. Exchange Post-Lecture Dialogue Lectures quickly become tedious and redundant for the youthful, hyperactive minds staring back at you, so counteract the typical â€Å"zoning out† behavior by reinforcing student participation instead. Prior to a lecture, communicate the topic using just one key phrase, for instance, The Civil War, and then instruct students to write five predictions about what you’ll cover based on their previous knowledge or assumptions. Engineer Role Playing Activities Since test preparation is intimidating for most students, give them a chance to experience a review session from your perspective- by teaching the material they are reviewing. Allow students to rotate back and forth in five-minute intervals so that everyone receives an opportunity to teach the material that will appear on their upcoming test. Encourage a creative delivery of the content, making it digestible for their fellow students. For example, they could pass around fill-in-the-blank study guides and practice quizzes, coordinate an interactive review game or choose volunteers to dramatize a concept.
